DIGITAL PLANETARIUM PROGRAM: MAGELLAN AND ELCANO
Magellan and Elcano is an educational fulldome film designed especially for screening in digital planetariums in museums and observatories as well as mobile school planetariums. This immersive production takes us into the heart of the Age of Discovery to relive one of the most astonishing feats in human history: the first circumnavigation of planet Earth.
Over its 33-minute duration, viewers will accompany Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastián Elcano on an epic journey spanning over 14,000 nautical leagues across three years. From their departure in Spain, crossing the Atlantic, sailing around South America, navigating the Pacific Ocean, reaching the Spice Islands and returning home, this voyage forever changed our understanding of the world.
In addition to its historical narrative, the film visually introduces fundamental astronomical concepts such as the North Star in the northern hemisphere, the Southern Cross in the southern hemisphere, the cardinal points, and constellations visible from different latitudes. It highlights the crucial role of astronomy in ancient navigation and how the stars guided explorers across the globe.
This production combines historical storytelling, astronomy outreach, and fulldome animation to deliver a unique, immersive and educational experience. It’s an excellent resource to support history, geography, science, and astronomy content in visually rich learning environments.
Magellan and Elcano is ideal for screening in schools, history and science museums, planetariums, science fairs, cultural festivals and family-oriented or educational events hosted by municipalities, libraries or public/private institutions. Its cross-disciplinary approach and carefully crafted 2D animation make it a valuable educational tool for a family audience.
A journey that unites sea and stars, science and history, inspiring new generations to dream, explore and understand the world with a global and critical perspective.
